    The Department of Science at the First Nations University of Canada, Regina campus, hosts a Health and Science Camp for Aboriginal students. In order to develop future health and science professionals, Aboriginal youth require an avenue where they can explore a variety of environmental careers and begin planning early for post-secondary training in an atmosphere of cultural pride, belonging and acceptance.

    The next Health and Science Camp will take place between July 11 to 16, 2010.

    The Department of Science has successfully delivered annual Health and Science camps over the past 10 years for Aboriginal youth. The camp during place during the summer and there are between 20 and 35 youth who participate in hands-on activities.

    Objectives of the Health and Science Camp

    • Youth will learn about health and wellness from multiple perspectives and worldviews;

    • Youth will interact with health professionals in a variety of health settings;

    • Youth will research and identify health training programs and develop career plans;

    • Youth will interact with Indigenous role models and learn about accomplishments in health;

    • Youth will learn about health and wellness from the perspective of Indigenous elders;

    • Youth will learn about the value Indigenous healing traditions in contemporary settings;

    • Youth will learn successful strategies in the transition between community and university;

    • Youth will be encouraged to develop a passion for lifelong learning;

    Department of Science Vision Statement

    Guided by a strong and caring team of elders, faculty, students, and First Nations community representatives, our vision is to deliver high quality science programs and holistic support systems based on Indigenous knowledge, natural laws, philosophies, practices and contemporary needs. Our overall vision is to promote scientific learning, teaching, research, and service that will have direct and indirect benefits for Indigenous communities in Canada in an age of technological advancements and globalization while increasing the representation of Indigenous people in science and health careers.

    Students will be exposed to a variety of scientists who work in areas that include biology, engineering, chemistry, physics, mathematics, environmental health, and computer science. Students will get an opportunity to experience laboratory settings, scientific equipment, and learn about the world around us through interesting, thought provoking, and fun activities.
