The members of the First Nations University of Canada’s Department of English believe that “to enhance the quality of life, and to preserve, protect, and interpret the history, language, culture, and artistic heritage of First Nations,” [Mission Statement] study of First Nations Literature is necessary and indispensable. The Department is committed to researching, analyzing, contextualising, and teaching First Nations Literatures. The ongoing researching and teaching of First Nations Literatures provides the Department with the unique opportunity to share these literatures with both First Nations and non-First Nations students. Under this mandate, the Department offers courses which are approved by the University of Regina English Department, but that also contain a strong First Nations component, particularly in the literature sections.

The Department is currently comprised of five full-time faculty members, and several sessional lecturers. All English Department sessionals have experience teaching pre-English 100 classes and First Nations literatures. The Department and the University are extremely pleased with the teaching quality provided by English Department faculty members and sessional lecturers whose credentials ensure that students gain excellent writing and communication skills which can be used both to further their study of First Nations and non-First Nations literatures and generally enhance their academic success at the First Nations University of Canada.
