What is ILP? ILP is the only university credit program in Canada which focuses on leadership skills from an intercultural perspective which reflects Saskatchewan's diversity.
ILP has 5 core courses which includes leadership theory, leadership skills development, student leadership development plans, a cultural/ leadership camp, internship and leading a youth workshop in the community. Why Take ILP? Facilitating cross-cultural understanding is a core skill for emerging leaders within Saskatchewan's workforce as the work force becomes more culturally diverse in Saskatchewan. Who is offering ILP? The First Nations University of Canada and University of Regina have collaborated on this unique program as a means of preparing the workforce of the future in Saskatchewan. ILP is administered, developed and delivered in partnership with both the University of Regina and First Nations University of Canada. Why is ILP being offered? The program explores leadership from an intercultural context within Saskatchewan. A major emphasis of the program will be the discovery of similarities and differences between diverse cultural backgrounds. Leadership is explored from differing world-views through sharing of alternate ideas, values, and backgrounds through readings, guest speakers, leaders within the province, international guests and the students' own diverse experiences. Emphasis is also placed on local community resources, including Elders and the importance of leadership within a community context. Cross-cultural understanding allows future leaders to envision a broad perspective of Saskatchewan's future in order to facilitate positive change. I work full time, can I take still participate? Currently we have students taking the certificate on a part time basis who are already in the workforce as well as several full-time students. Courses are conveniently scheduled in the evening to accommodate part time students. Admission and application deadlines are posted on the web site for new and returning students. All courses are offered in Regina. Is this program only for those interested in management or business? No, this program is geared for anyone interested in leadership and intercultural knowledge as it applies to workplaces. If you are wanting to prepare yourself for the workforce of the future as a leader for positive change, this Certificate is ideal! Many of our current students are completing the ILP program while working on degrees in Arts, Administration, Education, Journalism and Social Work and other degrees.
Is this certificate recognized externally? The Certificate in Intercultural Leadership is an official "Additional Qualification Certificate" for professional teachers by the Saskatchewan Board of Teacher Education and Certification. There are only 9 other certificate programs officially recognized in Saskatchewan and Alberta for this designation. ILP is recognized by Crown corporations as an ideal way to prepare future and current managers for working effectively with the workforce of the future. Private and public sector employers have commented on how the certificate opens doors for new students entering the workforce and also prepares current employees for leadership roles in future. Is this certificate for credit? Yes, students who complete this 30 credit certificate will be awarded a "Certificate in Intercultural Leadership" The courses you complete can also be "laddered" into a degree program if desired as all courses are for credit.
I have already completed a university credit program, are any of my classes transferable to this certificate? If you already completed university courses, certificate, diploma or degree, you may be able to apply some of the courses you have completed towards the ILP certificate. Check the ILP web site for approved electives. If you have attended a university other than FNUniv, U of R, Campion or Luther College, your courses may also be transferable. When can I begin the Program? Upon admission or re-admission to the U of R, students may register on-line for ILP Courses. Please refer to the U of R calendar for deadlines.
ILP 100 Introduction to Intercultural Leadership An introductory seminar examining leadership theory and the skills required for future leaders to lead organizations and communities in the context of the changing demographics and emerging labour force in Saskatchewan. Students will assess their attitudes, biases, beliefs, current leadership skills and create a personal leadership development plan.
You will also complete four other ILP courses in addition to the electives. Check the web site for more information on the certificate requirements. What is the tuition? Is there an application fee to apply to ILP? No, it is free to submit an online application to ILP. New students to university will have to be admitted to the university if you have never been enrolled in University of Regina, Campion College, Luther College or the First Nations University of Canada. A one time admission fee for new students is often required. Check this web site link for additional information on admission to university. I am new to university, how to I apply to this program? Students who have never attended university must be admitted to the university as well as applying to the ILP program. Click on this link for admission information. Deadlines dates can be found by clicking on the following link admission deadlines. Do I have to transfer out of my faculty in order to apply to the ILP program? No. Students who are completing other programs are not required to leave their current faculty in order to participate in the Intercultural Leadership Program. Students should however check with their current faculty to see if they are restricted from taking a program outside of their faculty. In many cases, students can be given special permission to take ILP even if restrictions exist. What Faculty is the Intercultural Leadership Program a part of? ILP is a Faculty of Arts program. However many of our current students are completing degrees from other faculties such as Administration, Education, Journalism and Social Work. Can I complete my current degree and still take ILP courses? Yes, you can continue to work on your present degree while also completing the course requirements of the ILP certificate. Check the certificate program requirements to see which courses are applicable towards your degree and how ILP courses can be credited towards your degree. ILP courses are Arts courses. Would taking ILP courses interfere with me completing my degree? Completing an ILP certificate will not prevent you from completing your degree. Many students work on more than one program successfully. Careful planning of your coursework for both programs will ensure that you can complete more than one program. How long will it take to complete an ILP certificate? Depending on how many courses you are required to take, it can vary. It can take as little as four regular semesters to complete the Certificate for a full time student especially if they already have some of the elective courses. Students who begin coursework in Fall 2008, could possibly complete their certificate requirements by the end of Fall 2009 depending on which courses they take. Part time students could take longer depending how many courses they take per semester.
