"Campbell Collegiate student Tara Willet and lab instructor Jody Bellegarde in the lab in the Department of Science"

I am Cree, fifteen years old, and a student at Campbell Collegiate where I have completed grade 10. I am from Little Pine First Nation.

This school year I had to do a research project for my science class. I decided to do my research project on the quality of water on Canadian reserves in terms of cleanliness and safety. I referred to Dr. Arzu Sardarli for some information on the subject after my individual research. He told me about his Indigenous knowledge- based research projects on the Water quality in the First Nations communities. I visited the Research Lab of the Department of Science at the First Nations University of Canada.  Lab Instructor Jody Bellegarde showed me the devices and equipment, which are used for measuring physical and chemical properties of water in the First Nations communities. I have learned a lot about the scientific and Indigenous-based methods of investigating water quality. By the way, I got 100% on my research project. Thank you so much for your help!

Our department offers:

  • Fully accredited contemporary science and pre-professional health-related university programs for Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal students

  • Aboriginal content and traditional knowledge in science courses where appropriate

  • Individual attention from instructors and tutors for students struggling with mathematics

  • Intellectual, emotional, spiritual and physical support services and workshops

Here is what is going on in our Department of Science!

  • Here is our Fall 2010 schedule!

  • Join us for our 2010 Health and Science Camp!  The camp consists of Aboriginal youth who have a long-term goal of improving the quality of life in their communities by choosing to become a Health or Science professional.  The Camp will be offered from July 11 to 16, 2010.  For more information on our Health and Science Camp please look at our website or contact Fidji Gendron (fgendron@firstnationsuniversity.ca).  Application forms are now available.

  • The National First Nations Environmental Contaminants Program (NFNECP) is a collaborative program between the First Nations University of Canada, the Assembly of First Nations and Health Canada. The program supports research of potential environmental and health impacts from environmental chemicals in First Nations Communities.

  • Wiseman Mathematics Contest:  The First Nations University of Canada organizes Wiseman Mathematics Contests in aboriginal schools in Saskatchewan, Alberta, and Manitoba with further extension across Canada.  The purpose of Mathematics contests is to motivate young students of reserve schools for learning Mathematics in competitive environment.  For the beginning the Grade 4 and 5 students have written the Contest. Then we can cover Junior High and High classes as well. Contest questions are based on the school curriculum. We collaborate with elders to use the First Nations cultural components in the contest questions. "The Native Journal" (media sponsor) and SIGA (cosponsor) help us in organization of the Contest. To prepare and motivate the students as well as Mathematics teachers of reserve schools we have been publishing preparatory materials "The Native Journal".
