First Nations University of Canada Department of Indigenous Studies Summer Institute 2010 has been postponed to 2011. "Teaching Treaties in the Classroom" July 5 - July 29, 2010 The success of the Saskatchewan Ministry of Learning's mandate to teach about the treaties (made in what is now Saskatchewan between the British Crown and First Nations) in classrooms is contingent upon increasing the number of teachers who are prepared and equipped to deliver quality First Nations Treaty instruction. The Office of the Treaty Commissioner (OTC) has developed the Kindergarten to Grade 12 treaty curriculum that teachers are now implementing in their respective classrooms. The OTC has also provided all schools in Saskatchewan with a Treaty Resource Kit with many resources that assist teachers with teaching treaties in the classroom. The Summer Institute 2010: "Teaching Treaties in the Classroom" will provide 40 teachers with an opportunity to develop treaty inclusive curriculum by providing context for the historical and cultural importance of treaties in the classroom. The contemporary importance of treaties, including how all Canadians are treaty people, will be illustrated by way of a course stream that stresses the pervasive influence of treaties in today's world. Also, practical curriculum development will be enhanced by way of interaction with a series of resource people and instructors; considerable time will be devoted to the curriculum development dynamic. The general format of the Institute includes two structured course streams in the mornings with less structured sessions in the afternoons (Monday to Thursday). Optional cultural events are planned for Fridays. For further information contact Rob Nestor, Summer Institute Director at 790-5950, Ext: 3426 or rnestor@firstnationsuniversity.ca.
